Introduction:

Thermal bonding is a key consolidation technology used in the production of nonwoven fabrics, where heat and pressure are applied to bond thermoplastic fibers at their cross-over points. In bicomponent nonwoven systems, this process often utilizes fibers with a lower-melting-point component—typically the sheath in a sheath/core configuration—to create stable bonding points without the need for chemical adhesives or additional binders.

Characteristics:

This technology enables uniform bonding throughout the fabric structure while preserving the integrity of the higher-melting-point core fibers. It is compatible with a wide range of polymer combinations such as PET/PE, PP/PE, and PLA/COPLA. Thermal bonding can be carried out through methods like calender bonding, through-air bonding, or ultrasonic bonding, depending on the desired fabric properties.

Advantages:

Thermal bonding offers significant advantages over chemical or mechanical bonding methods. It is an environmentally friendly process, as it eliminates the need for latex or chemical binders. The resulting fabrics exhibit enhanced softness, improved tensile strength, and excellent dimensional stability. Additionally, thermal bonding allows for high-speed production and consistent quality, making it ideal for large-scale manufacturing.

Thermally bonded bicomponent nonwovens are widely used in food package, desiccant, medical textiles (surgical gowns and face masks), filtration media, and automotive interiors. Their ability to combine strength with softness and breathability makes them suitable for both disposable and durable end-uses.

The softness, thickness, breathability, and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity can be customized to meet diverse application needs.
